Overview

The Land-Optimized, Networked, Globally Operated Long-range Integrated Advanced Navigator, or "LONGOLIAN", is a small tele-operable land vehicle designed to be controlled via cellular communication. By using the already-present and geographically-penetrative cellular tower infrastructure, the control range of the LONGOLIAN is not limited to a few miles, or even a few hundred miles; it is only limited by the availability of cell coverage in the area. Version v0.1 of the LONGOLIAN will be a very simple robotics platform that will allow for testing of control, power, and mechanical systems. Version v0.2 will begin to add video feedback and more flexible remote control to the platform.

v0.1 Requirements

  1. Fully battery-powered
  2. Ability to drive on the road and over small bumps and curbs
  3. Remote control via standard 2.4GHz RC TX/RX

v0.2 Requirements

  1. Fully battery-powered
  2. Ability to drive on the road and over small bumps and curbs
  3. Remote control via WiFi
  4. Video feedback over WiFi

Feature Ideas

Below is a list of possible features that may eventually be added to the LONGOLIAN, depending on the feasibility and desire for the feature:

  • Mobile app for control and video feedback
  • Weather-proofing
  • Weather sensors (temperature, ambient light, humidity)
  • Environmental sensors (bump sensors, proximity sensors, cliff sensors)
  • GPS location
  • Robotic arm
  • More cameras for video feedback
  • "Solar shell" - solar panels for recharging the robot in the field
  • "Hobo cable" - built-in wall charger; allows a helpful stranger to connect the robot to a wall outlet for charging
